Many people believe that the present Pope will be the last pope, as I once believed, because he is the last one on the list of popes created by St. Malachi.

However, we do not know why he stopped writing, perhaps he died before he could complete it. At any rate, there is evidence that there will be at least one other pope.

Pope Pius X (d. 1914):

In the middle of an audience with Franciscans in 1909, he seemed to fall into a trance. After awaking, he exclaimed: “What I have seen is terrifying! Will I be the one, or will it be a successor? What is certain is that the Pope will leave Rome and, in leaving the Vatican, he will have to pass over the dead bodies of his priests!” Just before he died in 1914, he had a related vision: “I have seen one of my successors, of the same name, who was fleeing over the bodies of his brethren. He will take refuge in some hiding place; but after a brief respite, he will die a cruel death. Respect for God has disappeared from human hearts. They wish to efface even God’s memory. This perversity is nothing less than the beginning of the last days of the world.”
